7,9-di-tert-butyl-oxaspiro[4.5]deca-6,9-diene-2,8-dione is a small molecule compound isolated from the methanolic extract of *Carpobrotus edulis* (commonly known as sour fig). It is currently being investigated for its potential anticancer properties, specifically against pancreatic cancer. Research presented at AACR 2026 indicates that the compound induces apoptosis in MIA PaCa2 pancreatic cancer cells by activating the extrinsic TNF-mediated apoptotic pathway. Mechanistic studies, including protein-ligand docking, suggest that the compound has a high binding affinity for several key apoptotic and signaling proteins, including the Tumor Necrosis Factor Receptor (TNFR), Fas-associated protein with death domain (FADD), p53, Bak1, and Signal Transducer and Activator of Transcription 3 (STAT3). Preclinical assays have demonstrated that the compound selectively targets cancer cells while sparing non-cancerous MRC-5 cells, suggesting a favorable safety profile for further development.
